In phonics we will move into learning about the first, middle and ending sounds in words and how to listen for the different sounds. Short vowel sounds will be a focus over the next few weeks. This concept will be integrated into writing, where students will continue to label objects or pictures by stretching out the sounds they hear in the words and writing the matching letter. This is inventive spelling and should be a misspelling. Although this seems wrong, it is very developmental for this age. We will also move into writing sentences to describe our pictures. Sight Words: went, where, will, your, all (only introduce new words once your child has mastered the previous words) Math: The students will sort objects onto categories with like traits such as all circular items in one group and all square in the other. They will stretch their thinking by asking them to come up with the rule (or trait) they sorted items by. They will also compare the groups to see which one is greater or less than. Finally we will move into addition strategies. They will be putting groups together. For example, If I have 3 red bears and 2 blue bears, how many bears to I have all together? Please remember to have your child practice counting to 50 or higher if then can. Social Studies: This week we will kick off to our culture unit, where we will learn what culture is.
